Defender with ‘tremendous tools’ set for Luton medical

Young Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Ryan Giles is poised for his Luton Town medical today ahead of his proposed £5million move to Kenilworth Road.

According to the Express and Star, the 23-year-old did not travel to Portugal with the Wolves squad for pre-season amid interest from the Hatters and Middlesbrough, it is now apparent that Luton have won the race for his signature.

Giles spent last season on loan in the Championship with Boro where he excelled. In 48 appearances for Michael Carrick’s side, he registered 12 assists as a remarkable turnaround in form saw his temporary team reach the Championship play-offs.

The left-back was an impressive figure in the Championship with Wolves’ player marketing manager Matt Jackson full of praise for the youngster.

“We certainly know from an attacking sense he has got tremendous tools for the Championship,” said Jackson.

“It’s just now whether they translate to higher levels.

“It is always down to the player, their willingness to learn, their willingness to try the things they have been taught on the field of play, and when you get Ryan in an environment like Middlesbrough, the way he is asked to express himself, it is quite right he is now delivering the very best that he can do.

“His pathway has been excellent.”

Giles is a product of the Wolves academy and made his debut for the club back in 2019, featuring for over 70 minutes in a 2-2 draw away from home against former side Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup. That would prove to be his only appearance for the West Midlands outfit as he endured multiple loan spells away from Molineux during his stay.

An England Under-20 international, the defender has featured for six different clubs over seven loan spells.

Giles’ journey

In order, Giles has racked up experience with the following; Telford United, Shrewsbury, Coventry City, Rotherham United, Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough. The Sky Blues with the pleasure of loaning him twice.

His progression through the Football League is clear to see, and he is now deservedly set to taste his first dose of Premier League football with the Hatters.

Amari’i Bell and Dan Potts will provide his competition for the starting left-back spot, with Giles expected to shine in the top flight.

Luton have seemingly bagged themselves a very tidy addition.
