With the release of squad numbers for the Hatters, eagle-eyed fans have noticed Aidan Francis-Clarke and Joe Johnson have been included, lets look into what they could offer Rob Edwards’ side this season.

Edwards has never shied away from giving young players a chance. Louie Watson, Alfie Doughty and Gabriel Osho played key roles in securing promotion last season.

The latest squad features Joe Johnson and Aidan Francis-Clarke as number 38 and 40 respectively.

Who is Aidan Francis-Clarke?

Francis-Clarke spent the second half of last season on loan at St Albans City.

He made 10 appearances, scoring one and assisting one during his time there.

At 19-years-old, he is a versatile defender who plays predominantly as a centre back but is able to play as a defensive midfielder.

In March, he was named in the National League South team of the week’s, as his performances were recognised.

In pre-season for the Hatters, Francis-Clarke featured in a 3-1 win against Vfl Bochum and may be looking to make more first team appearances this season.

Who is Joe Johnson?

Johnson has already made two first team appearances for Town at age 17.

This came due to an injury crisis and lack of defenders within the squad at the time, this didn’t stop Edwards praising the youngster’s performance post match.

“He did handle it well, we’ve got belief in him.

“A couple of good interceptions and blocks and positionally very good, he’s got a good confidence about him.”

A left back by trade, he has also received recognition from his team mates, with Carlton Morris saying: “It’s brilliant, he’s been good in training, never seems out of place.”

With praise coming in for the teenager and a place in the Premier League squad, this could be a positive season in a top league for Johnson to develop further.
