Joe Johnson made his Luton Town debut against Exeter City in the EFL Cup and received praise from his manager and fans.

On the night, the Hatters suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the League One outfit, getting knocked out of the EFL Cup.

Despite dominating the game for large spells, Edwards’ side wasn’t able to take their chances to advance.

The Grecians made it through to the next round thanks to a Demetri Mitchell goal, late in proceedings.

With the result aside, it was still a memorable night for Town’s teenage defender.

What has Rob Edwards said about Joe Johnson?

The Englishman became the first academy graduate to play for the club in two years.

Sam Beckwick was the last, also featuring in the EFL Cup for the Hatters.

With Luton dominating the ball in the first half, the youngster found his feet in the game quickly and was praised for that.

He was replaced not long after 60 minutes. This was as he began to struggle with the Exeter attacks becoming more and more frequent.

The 17-year old had the second-highest amount of touches for Town on the night and received praise from his manager.

Short and sweet. When asked about Johnson, Edwards said: “He’s a really good young player, it was a good experience for him going forward.”

Although it wasn’t the dream result, his first start will live long in the memory.

Posting to his social media, the teenager said: “Amazing to make my full debut. Unfortunate result but plenty to take away and learn from.”

A good young player with a bright future. Hopefully, Hatters fans can look forward to seeing more of him this year.
