John McAtee has departed Luton Town on loan. He joined Barnsley for the season in his second loan in as many seasons.

McAtee spent last season on loan at Grimsby Town, where the Hatters signed him from in 2022.

Town picked him up after an electrifying season in the National League which saw him score the goals to fire the Mariners to League Two.

Last season he made 31 appearances, scoring and assisting four goals a piece.

He has played a part in pre season under Rob Edwards, getting a goal and an assist in a game against Peterborough United.

McAtee, at 24-years old needs to shine at Oakwell this season in order to force himself into the thinking at Kenilworth road.

A move to a new league, higher up the pyramid, could be beneficial to the midfielder as he looks to realise his potential.

On joining the Reds McAtee said: “The move has been in the pipeline for quite a while.

“I was buzzing to come down and get it all sorted.”

Luton’s number 21 has never made a competitive appearance for the club but there are hopes he can play his part.

A strong dribbler, he is confident driving forward with the ball and is hard to get off it once he gets going.

He has an eye for a pass, with through balls cutting through the lines his main weapon to gather assists.

Scoring goals also comes naturally to the midfielder, striking from range as he looks for a pathway to goal, something he did particularly well in the National League.

His defensive work rate is what sets him apart from other attacking minded midfielders as he isn’t afraid of getting back and sticking a foot in.

If he can match his fifth tier form in the third, he will be a great asset to Barnsley and will be of interest to Edwards in the future.
