The Hatters do not need this ‘out of contract’ defender

This week, Luton Town have been linked to Zak Vyner, out of Bristol City. He has a year remaining on his current deal.

The Hatters have made nine signings so far this summer, including four defensive minded options.

Who is Zak Vyner?

Vyner has spent his whole career at the Robins, making four loan spells away from the club over the course of 19 years.

He has spent the last four seasons as a first team regular for City and with his contract running down he is attracting plenty of interest.

Last season Vyner was awarded the players’ player of the year award as his peers awarded his performances across the year.

He is adept at playing out from the back and is especially good at playing long through balls out of defence.

Although he is available on a cheaper fee due to his contract situation, he may not be worth bringing to the Hatters this window.

Why shouldn’t Luton sign Zak Vyner?

A cheap fee for a well experienced Championship defender would be a good deal for a club looking for a centre back option.

With all the signings that Town have made so far including defensive options Thomas Kaminski and Ryan Giles, additional signings may not be best advised.

Looking at Nottingham Forest as an example, signing lots of players doesn’t always help. With nine players joining the Hatters already, only first team starters should be considered.

Rob Edwards’ formation typically features three senior centre backs and with six already at the club, another one isn’t necessary.

The only reason for signing Vyner should be if a centre back such as Reece Burke or Dan Potts leave the club.

Luton’s togetherness as a squad is what has taken them up through the Football League to the Premier League, too many signings could disturb this unity.

Vyner would be a useful signing but unless there are departures, the Hatters should hold off.
